Arlington boys win NCC track title

Eagles host Pioneers, fellow conference teams for meet

Arlington junior Kaden Foust celebrated his 400-meter dash win just after crossing the finish line Saturday during the Nebraska Capitol Conference (NCC) Meet.
His teammate, Dallin Franzluebbers, shared in the success, taking second on the AHS track.
“We're really just trying to get as many team points as we can,” Foust said.
The Eagles and Fort Calhoun Pioneers did all day, earning top finishes across the 34 total boys and girls events. The AHS boys won the NCC title, edging second-place Syracuse by nine points, while the Arlington girls finished three behind the Rockets for runner-up honors.
The FCHS boys were fifth and the girls seventh, too.
In total, the host Eagles won 13 events. They had to beat out second-place Pioneers more than once.
Nolan May did it twice. The AHS junior won the NCC's 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, besting second- and third-place Calhoun brothers Ely and Lance Olberding both times.
May finished the 1-mile race in 4:40.39, while claiming the 2-mile in 10:13.55. Ely Olberding, however, clocked in at 4:44.97 and 10:25.26, respectively.
Lane Olberding, meanwhile, was third in both distance races. Arlington's Luke Hammang and FCHS' Will Dennis took fourth and fifth in the 1,600 as well, giving Washington County all top-five spots.
In the long jump, though, Foust edged out Pioneer Michael Maxon by 2 inches. The Eagle finished with a gold medal jump of 19-11, while the FCHS standout covered 19-9.
“My shin has been bugging me, so, like, still getting a couple jumps in and being able to win was really nice,” Foust said.
Maxon, meanwhile, has shown improvement in the long jump all season, recently breaking 20 feet at a regular season meet.
“I've learned the form,” he said. “Last year, I was pretty new to it. It was my first year doing it.”
Now, though, he has new goals. He wants to clear 20 feet, 6 inches, and wants to qualify for state with a complete understanding of what it will take.
“Hit the board,” the Pioneer said, noting the preferred takeoff point in both the long and triple jumps.
In addition to Foust and May, Arlington's Keelianne Green, Cadie Robinson, Hailey O'Daniel and Kevin Flesner won conference titles in individual events. Green was first in the long jump (17-2.75), 400 dash (1:00.22) and 800 run (2:22.02).
Flesner won the boys' 800 (2:06.24), while O'Daniel earned the 1,600 run in 5:38.99. Robinson's best attempt in the shot put covered 38-11, which was 3-7 further than teammate Taylor Arp's silver-medal attempt.
Three Eagle relay teams also finished their events in first. Franzluebbers, Flesner, May, Foust, Whitney Wollberg, O'Daniel, Kelise Krivohlavek, Green and Macy Wolf all contributed.
Fort Calhoun's top relay finish came in the boys' 3,200-meter race. Seth Waters, Lawson Tjardes, Chris Post-Witeowl and Dennis took second in 8:48.06, besting a third-place Arlington lineup of Hammang, August Burns, Trey Hill and Flesner.
