Foul trouble cost the Arlington boys basketball team in its season-opening loss.
On Saturday, though, the Eagles stayed out of it and earned coach Jake Polk's first win at AHS. Six-foot-6 junior Trent Koger and company topped Columbus Lakeview at home, 62-42.
“We were very confident shooting the ball,” he said after a 21-point night.
The Vikings (1-1 overall) took an 8-7 lead during the first period, but the hosts responded with a 14-0 run. Koger hit a 3-pointer first before Jaxson Burns and Kieryn Grothe combined for a five-point possession. Burns was fouled on a long-range shot and made two of his three free throws before an offensive rebound led to his teammate's make from distance.
“It felt like we could do no wrong,” Koger said. “We were making everything and playing great defense.”
Arlington led 21-8 at the end of the scoring streak and extended its lead to 37-19 by halftime. Grothe and Burns made 3s during the 16-8 second quarter.
“(We) had the energy really high, which helps with everything,” Koger said.
The Eagles didn't run out of it either, outscoring Lakeview in the third period, 13-7. Their lead hit its peak in the fourth, too, when Schuyler Logemann hit a corner 3-pointer at 55-26.
In addition to Koger's 21, Grothe finished with 14 AHS points. Burns had 13, while Logemann scored seven.
Jacob Dawson led the Vikings in defeat with 10.
Eagles drop opener by 10
Arlington made five 3s and scored 21 third-period points, but lost Thursday at West Point-Beemer, 69-59, after the Cadets scored 23 points in the fourth.
West Point held a 27-24 halftime lead and, ultimately, soured coach Polk's debut with a 10-point victory. Three Eagles fouled out in the game.
Grothe led the Eagles on the road, scoring 14 points with four made 3-pointers for the game. Burns hit two shots from long range as well and scored 11 points overall, while Koger had 10 and eight rebounds, too.
