FCHS boys assistant to coach girls hoops
Fort Calhoun boys basketball assistant coach Eric Jones is the Pioneers' new head girls basketball coach.
FCHS announced the news Thursday on social media after coach Marty Plum resigned from the position earlier this month. The Pioneers went 16-8 this past season.
Jones takes over the girls' program after previous coaching stops in Pleasanton and Omaha Brownell-Talbot.
“We're excited for this opportunity and to be a part of the Fort Calhoun community,” Jones posted on his personal X, formerly Twitter, account. “Thank you (FCHS boys coach TJ O'Connor) for not taking no for an answer 4 years ago, and getting me restarted on this journey. Let's get to work.”

Winter sports athletes claim academic honors
Athletes from Arlington, Blair and Fort Calhoun were all recently recognized with the recent release of the Winter 2023-2024 Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association Academic All-State Awards.
“Each year the NSAA and the NCPA recognize students during Fall, Winter and Spring Seasons who are nominated by their schools for their individual academic excellence, leadership, and significant contributions in their NSAA activity,” the NSAA's release noted.
Arlington basketball players Owen Ladehoff, Schuyler Logemann, Taylor Arp and Austyn Flesner were honored as were wrestlers Tate Johannes, Braxton Soll, Honora Andreasen and Callee Shearer. Joseph Burns and Kolby Tighe of the AHS' speech team were recognized, too.
Blair basketball players Crayton Macholan, Cooper Sorensen, Leah Chance and Joslyn Policky claimed academic honors as well. Wrestlers Blaise Baughman, Tannon Bellamy, Taryn Bellamy and Jo Inget did, too, as did speech team members Diane Mitchell and Avalon Morgan.
Grayson Bouwman, Declyn Otte, Bria Bench and Kaylee Taylor represented Fort Calhoun basketball on the list as did wrestlers Trey King III, Seth Waters and Madi Larrick.
