Future Nebraska walk-on quarterback Bode Soukup took his first high school golf swing Tuesday during the Blair Bears' season debut at Elkhorn Valley Golf Club in Hooper.
A four-year football player and three-year track and field athlete, the senior hit his first tee shot down the fairway and, ultimately, finished nine holes with a team-best 40 strokes. The Bears carded 193 overall, dropping a dual to their host, Logan View, 168-193.
“First meet, I was pleased with that score,” BHS coach Ross Udey said of Soukup's 40.
The soon-to-be Cornhusker struggled on the seventh hole, but delivered on Nos. 1-6, 8 and 9.
“He's the real deal,” the coach added.
Soukup finished third individually during the dual, taking two more strokes than the Raiders' Josh Egbers and one more than Kolton Kriete.
Jase Lantry, meanwhile, carded Blair's second-lowest total with 49 swings in the junior varsity lineup.
“He looked pretty good,” Udey said.
Connor Wayman added 50 strokes in varsity play for BHS, while Justin Bird had 51, and both Tyler Lantry and Degan Dresden had 52.
The Bears' Jacob Hanson notched 57 swings in JV play, too, while Tyler Wolsmann had 58 and Jaxson Doolin carded 65. Asa Harvey totaled 66 as well.
Coach Udey's team next hosts a quadrangular Tuesday at River Wilds Golf Club, according to the BHS activities calendar. Fremont Bergan, Cedar Bluffs, Oakland-Craig and Blair tee off at 3 p.m.
