Fort Calhoun boys continue winning ways

Girls basketball team falls to 0-5

The newly-ranked Fort Calhoun boys basketball team defeated the preseason-rated Yutan Chieftains on the road Tuesday, 48-42.
The Pioneers — No. 8 in the nebpreps.com ratings — improved to 5-0 with the hard-fought win, while the Chieftains — No. 9 in the Omaha World-Herald's early rankings — fell to 3-2.
Coach TJ O'Connor's squad overtook Yutan with a 12-3 fourth period. FCHS trailed 39-36 entering the final quarter, but earned the win by holding the Chieftains to just Carter Tichota's late 3-point make.
In the meantime, Pioneers Zane Schwarz and Grayson Bouwman each scored five points during the final 8 minutes of Tuesday's game. Bouwman scored 11 for the game, while Schwarz had 10 and Carsen Schwarz led Fort Calhoun with 12 points.
Jake Richmond led all scorers with 13, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers built on their unbeaten start to the 2021-22 high school basketball season.

FCHS girls suffer 5th defeat
The Fort Calhoun girls fell to 0-5 Tuesday, dropping a 35-21 road game to 3-3 Yutan.
Dala Drowne led the Pioneers with eight points, while Bria Bench and Tess Skelton each added four. Their team led 4-3 after one period, but fell behind by nine when the Chieftains outscored coach Marty Plum's squad 17-7 during the second.
FCHS won the third period 6-3, cutting Yutan's advantage to six, but the home team responded with a 12-4 fourth to win the game.
The Chieftains' Shaylynn Campbell led all scorers with 10 points. Maura Tichota added eight.
