Preston Johnson won a pair of sprints Friday as the Fort Calhoun boys track and field team took second at an eight-team indoor meet on the College of Saint Mary campus.
Kaylee Taylor and Afton Byelick, meanwhile, claimed second-place results as the Pioneers' girls team earned fifth. Altogether, coach Mandy Taylor's squad scored 121.5 team points in Omaha.
Johnson topped the 60- and 200-meter dash races. The senior finished with times of 7.46 and 23.92 seconds, respectively.
FCHS boys Lawson Tjardes, Matthew Kelly and TJ DeMilt added individual second-place results, too. Tjardes finished the 1,600 run in 4:51.14, Kelly clocked in at 9.32 seconds in the 60 hurdles and DeMilt cleared 12 feet in the pole vault. DeMilt completed his runner-up height — a new personal record — on his third attempt, getting up off of the mat and keeping his pole from knocking the bar off its supports just in time.
The Pioneers' 3,200 relay team of Tjardes, Travis Skelton, Chris Post-Whiteowl and Will Dennis added a second-place finish as well. Clay Bohnenkamp (60 dash) and the 1,600 relay team of Blake Welchert, Michael Maxon, Kelly and Johnson secured bronze medals indoors, too.
Byelick and Taylor led Pioneer girls with runner-up field event finishes. Taylor was second in the long jump, clearing 15 feet, 7.75 inches, while Byelick pole vaulted over a bar set at 8 feet — a new school-best mark.
Fort Calhoun's Raeann Massey (800 run), Ari Nelson (triple jump) and Bria Bench (high jump) earned third-place finishes in Omaha, too.
The Pioneers next compete 9 a.m. Thursday during at meet at Platteview High School. It will be Coach Taylor's team's debut outside this season.
