No. 5 Blue Devils win both games

Circumstances and cooperation led the Class C No. 5 Wayne baseball team into a Washington County doubleheader Tuesday.
After cold temperatures postponed the Blue Devils' home game with Arlington on Monday, the Fort Calhoun Pioneers agreed to play their varsity matchup in Wayne an hour earlier the next day. The 3:30 p.m. start allowed for the Eagles to step in and play the Blue Devils in their postponed game at the opener's conclusion Tuesday.
In the end, though, Washington County went 0-for-2.

Pioneers fall 10-5
Seven FCHS ballplayers logged hits against Wayne, but the Blue Devils' five-run third inning propelled them to a 10-5 victory.
The Pioneers led only once, securing a 1-0 lead during the top half of the first inning when AJ Duros doubled out of the leadoff spot and Kenny Wellwood singled to plate him.
Wayne then notched two runs during the bottom half and extended their lead to 7-1 during the third frame.
Fort Calhoun applied pressure back during the fourth, however, when Declyn Otte notched a two-run double. Chase Bierman batted the senior in next, cutting the Pioneers' deficit to just 7-4.
Chase Premer added an RBI double during the fifth inning, too, but it wasn't enough as coach Roy Prauner's team dropped to 1-2 overall. FCHS was set to play Thursday against Plattsmouth and next competes 4:30 p.m. today in a home game against Louisville.

Wayne tops AHS 8-5
Arlington pulled within one run of fifth-ranked Wayne during both the fifth- and sixth innings, but couldn't pull off a road upset Tuesday.
The Blue Devils scored five runs during the same two frames, earning an 8-5 victory. They improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Eagles dropped to 1-2.
Blaine Vogt pushed across AHS' first run of the day during the third inning after Tim Halley tripled. Still trailing 3-1 through four innings, the Eagles' Luke Sharp hit into a run-scoring error to pull coach Tyler Stender's team within 3-2.
Wayne responded with three runs during the bottom half of the fifth, but the Eagles again pulled within striking distance with three of their own runs in the sixth. Halley sacrificed, Killian McIntosh hit an RBI single and Vogt added a sac fly to pull the Eagles within 6-5.
It wasn't enough, though, as the Blue Devils again extended their lead back out to three runs and eventually won by that margin.
AHS was set to play Tekamah-Herman on Thursday and next competes 10 a.m. Saturday at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The Eagles start their home triangular with a game against Omaha Roncalli before a Elkhorn Mount Michael matchup at, approximately, 2 p.m.
