Despite a 5-4 loss to Omaha Brownell-Talbot, Blair tennis coach Matt Aschoff left the Koch Family Outdoor Tennis Center “extremely pleased” with the Bears.
“We definitely had a chance to win it,” he said.
BHS fell behind 4-2 through six singles matches, but battled back with a 2-1 showing in doubles competition. Seniors Maicy Lourens and Phoenixx Penke came back from a 5-2 deficit in No. 1 doubles to win 9-8 by 7-5 tiebreaker.
The Bears' Caitlyn Haggstrom and Bailey Dingfield, meanwhile, won 8-4, while Addy Nilges and Mallory Dreher lost a close 8-6 match.
Lourens and Dingfield also won their singles matches — 8-0 and 8-6, respectively. Haggstrom, Anissa Delgado, Nilges and Penke competed, but came up short. The trio lost 8-4, 8-6, 8-4 and 8-4, respectively.
Aschoff said Blair continues to improve, and he hopes that continues as the season continues. The Bears were scheduled to compete Monday against Ralston and take on the Fremont Tigers today at FHS.
