Six Blair Bears advanced through subdistrict competition Saturday at West Point-Beemer and will compete Friday during the Class A-2 District Girls Wrestling Tournament in York.
Matches begin at 2 p.m.
The Bears representing coach Terry Bellamy's team are Josie Tilson, Katie Wheeler, Ali Wheeler, Savanah Roan, Madi James and Reata Malmberg. Five of the six won semifinals or consolation semifinals matches to qualify for the final tournament before state, which is Feb. 15-17 in Omaha.
Malmberg, meanwhile, wrestled a semifinal in West Point, but advanced as one of only four 235-pounders entered into Saturday's tournament. She is 7-21 this season.
Tilson and Ali Wheeler, however, went unbeaten in subdistrict matches. Tilson was 2-0 at 105 pounds, qualifying for districts with a first-period pin of Madison's Elizabeth Juan Lucas.
Wheeler went 3-0 at 115 pounds, improving to 28-5 overall with three pins, including a 22-second effort in the opening round.
At 130 pounds, Roan, a Blair senior, won three-straight matches to qualify for districts after losing her opener. She beat Madison's Hser Thein by 6-0 decision to advance.
Like Roan, James and Katie Wheeler won consolation semifinals to earn their spots in York. James, a 145-pounder, was 2-1 Saturday with two pins.
Katie Wheeler, meanwhile, secured a 2-1 tournament mark at 110 pounds, winning her last match of the day by first-period pin.
Four more Bears — Riley Martin, Maia Opetaia-Swope, Karlie Dewitt-Dodd and Kalli Jordan — won subdistrict matches, but fell short of top-four finishes to move onto the next date of the NSAA's girls wrestling schedule. Martin was 2-2 at 100 pounds and finished the season 24-7 overall. Opetaia-Swope, Dewitt-Dodd and Jordan, meanwhile, claimed a win apiece at West Point-Beemer.
