AHS girls' 18-point lead slips away in loss

Eagles score just 5 2nd-half points

Coach Luke Brenn liked his basketball team's first half and its final 2 minutes of the second.
“But that in-between,” he said, exasperated Friday night at Arlington High School.
After the Eagle girls scored the first points of the third period, Nebraska City scored 19 straight, earning a 29-28, come-from-behind victory. AHS (1-3 overall) had led by as many as 18 points before halftime.
“If you're not paying attention to the little details, sometimes those little details can come back and bite you,” Brenn said. “That's what happened.”
Despite not scoring for nearly 14 minutes, the Eagles led until the Pioneers' Emilee Marth completed a 3-point play for a 26-25 lead with just 1:53 remaining. Nebraska City's lead grew to four before Keelianne Green knocked down a jump shot — and Kate Miller added a free throw — but it wasn't enough.
“Hopefully, it's going to be a learning experience,” Brenn said.
The Eagles' first half was the opposite of the second. They jumped out to a 23-5 advantage midway through the second period with Kailynn Gubbels and Green knocking down shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
Gubbels finished with a game-high 16 points, while Green had nine and Miller scored three. Madi Mitchell scored 10 to lead the Pioneers, who improved to 2-2.
