It’s time for another Washington County school year of Nannen & Harte Physical Therapy Athletes of the Week.

This first entry is a doozy, too.

Lucie Larsen, Britt Nielsen and Kalli Ulven showed out during the first week of the season, leading their respective teams to a combined 11-3 start. Their Fort Calhoun, Arlington and Blair teammates were good, too, but these standouts flat-out produced.

Here’s how.

Lucie Larsen, Fort Calhoun softball: The junior Pioneer secured a slight edge as my Athlete of the Week choice by striking out five batters from the pitching circle. The eye-catching stats, however, come at the plate. FCHS started 3-1 and Larsen was 8-for-12 with two triples and a team-best six RBIs, according to maxpreps.com.

Britt Nielsen, Arlington softball: The junior Eagle hammered the ball as her team started 4-1. During the season-opening Bayard doubleheader alone, she went 6-for-6 with three homers and 11 RBIs. From there, she added a fourth homer Saturday in Wayne as AHS took third during the Devils' tourney.

Kalli Ulven, Blair softball: The senior Bear hit a grand slam in her first at-bat of the season and there wasn’t much of — if any — a drop-off from there. She finished the opener with five RBIs and five strikeouts in the pitching circle before adding a key homer against Millard South and at least two more RBI doubles during the Bellevue East Chieftain Invitational.

Again, it was a tremendous weekend for Washington County high school softball. The stats and scores you read in Tuesday's Washington County Pilot-Tribune back that up.

Today, though, I want to remind you that Athlete of the Week coverage continues Wednesday with the weekly video interview, which will include one of today's selections. Make sure to check that out when its posted here on the Enterprise Media Group website.

Thanks for reading.
