First off, I hope your Labor Day weekend is going well.
Mine is.
I started off my Sunday reflecting on the week that was in Washington County high school sports. Again, as I thought about it, I realized there were plenty of candidates for each school’s Nannen & Harte Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week.
My choices, simply put, are among their teams’ best. They are Hailey O’Daniel, Hailey Roewert and Maelie Nelson.
Later this week — likely Wednesday on enterprisepub.com/sports — you’ll find out who I’ve selected as the overall Washington County Athlete of the Week, too. As a reminder, there is no vote this year based on feedback from last.
Thank you for your continual support of these athletes. Please share their accomplishments with family and friends as we celebrate their hard work.

Maelie Nelson, Fort Calhoun cross-country
The freshman bolstered the Pioneers lineup and finished 10th over 5 kilometers in her high school running debut at Plattsmouth’s Rhylander Park. She finished just behind ninth-place junior teammate Bria Bench in 22:03.97.

Hailey O’Daniel, Arlington cross-country
Defending state champion Keelianne Green finished Arlington’s first race of the 2022 season in first place. But her teammate, O’Daniel, also impressed, beating every other runner in the field at the Omaha Concordia Invite. She was second in 22:12.86 and is currently ranked fifth in Class C, according to preprunningnerd.com.

Hailey Roewert, Blair volleyball
A first-year starter, the sophomore has excelled in her setter position during the Bears’ 3-3 start. In a 3-0 win against Plattsmouth, she notched five kills, seven ace serves, 15 assists and three digs. Days later, she helped her team to a 2-1 showing at a Wahoo tournament, too, with Bear wins against Lincoln Christian and the host Warriors.
