The Blair High School volleyball team swept its way to its first victory of the season Thursday.
Coach Becca Mellema's squad won 25-22, 25-16 and 26-24 at Plattsmouth, improving to 1-2 overall. Taylor Mostek's kill gave the Bears a 23-18 lead during the final set, but they had to dig in to pull off the three-set sweep after the Devils evened the score at 24-all.
“We've been working a lot on mental toughness and bringing positive energy,” Mellema said. “The teams we've played so far have prepared us for matches like this.”
Setter Hailey Roewert's kill produced BHS' 25-24 advantage at the end of the match before Ellia Klanderud finished it off at the net. Mellama said both Bears deserved “MVP” status with their efforts during the road contest.

Syracuse beats FCHS, 3-0
The Fort Calhoun Pioneers fell to 2-2 this season with a 25-15, 25-18 and 25-10 loss at Syracuse on Thursday.
Coach Liz Sevcik said the Rockets hit the ball well and “put up a big block.” On her side, Ruby Garmong and Grace Genoways played strong on the road. The Pioneers coach said Garmong was good on the right side defensively, while Genoways worked the net and made “smart” hits in defeat.
