Staying warm and taking aim

BYSS competes, excels at cold ECTC trapshoot

High school trapshooters did their best to stay warm Saturday during the second Eastern Cornhusker Trapshooting Conference weekend of the season.
With temperatures well below freezing and a blustery wind, bundled-up young Blair Youth Shooting Sports (BYSS) marksmen and women huddled inside the team trailer at Bellevue Rod and Gun Club around heaters. Others found shelter inside buildings or temporary tents in-between shots at the Senior Division event.
Out in the elements, though, Washington County shooters faired well despite the cold. BYSS' Gold lineup took first in the handicap shoot, taking out 183 clay pigeons. Team members were Wyatt Blackford, Kalvin Kies, Jacob Vanek, Harold Kies and Tyler Hume.
An Arlington-heavy Fremont Black lineup, meanwhile, finished second in the high overall and 16-yard standings. Zane Gerrish, Cade Arnett, Wyatt Widman and Grant Rump all contributed to the top effort.
Gerrish led all Arlington marksmen with an 81-for-100 effort in Bellevue. Wyatt Flesner — who was first in the handicap category — hit 80 targets altogether, too, while Arnett, Connor Flesner and Widman took out 78, 73 and 72, respectively. Arnett, notably, was second in the 16-yard shoot.
Arlington's Kaleb Dowling and Jake Flesner hit 72 and 71 total targets for their Fremont team, too.
For Blair, Riley Brodersen took out a team-best 82 clay pigeons overall. Triston Clausen shot 79 — finishing third in the 20-21-yard shoot — Kalvin Kies hit 76 and Harold Kies took out 75.
Roman Sahm — who was second in the handicap shoot — went 74-for-100 for BYSS, too. Blackford hit 73, Hume shot 72 and so did Vanek. Gaige Bolton and Elijah Tabor topped 70, too, finishing with 71 and 70, respectively.
Blair's top female finisher was Evie Hearn, who went 67-for-100 overall on the cold day in Bellevue.

Blair Gold 3rd at Junior shoot
The Blair Gold team finished third overall at the Eastern Cornhusker Trapshooting Conference's Junior shoot Saturday, too. Competing in Papillion, Colton Nixon, Johnny Henton, Tregan Baker, Jase Lantry and Landry Benoit combined for the finish.
Nixon led BYSS with a 43-for-50 effort, while Henton was 42-for-50 just as Arlington marksman Brayden Stonehocker was for his Fremont team.
