The Fort Calhoun High School volleyball team pulled within one win of last season's total Tuesday night.
The Pioneers improved to 3-2 with a 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 25-18 and 15-10) home victory against Omaha Brownell-Talbot. Coach Liz Sevcik's team fell behind 2-1 after a 25-17 third set, but won two straight to hand the visiting Raiders their seventh loss of the fall.
“We finished pretty strong,” the first-year FCHS coach said of the 15-10 fifth. “Serves and grit helped make the difference. They had to really work for it.”
The win was a team effort.
“Each (player) seemed to carry the weight at different times, and I think that helped us to come back and finish strong,” Sevcik said.
Fort Calhoun was 4-26 a year ago, but is just one win shy of matching that campaign with more than a month of the 2022 regular season to go. It got there with a five-set victory Tuesday night.
“They battled back and didn't give up when things got tough,” Sevcik said. “I think we had a shift in mindset that helped get us through.”
