The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is investigating an in-custody death in Arlington Friday afternoon.

According to a release issued by NSP, an adult man, identified as 38-year-old Donald Moreno, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Washington County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at a residence Friday, Feb. 10.

The release states that deputies were called for a welfare check at an Arlington residence. Deputies were allowed inside by an occupant where they then discovered Moreno holding a firearm. Deputies were able to evacuate multiple children from the home.

After speaking with the subject for “several minutes,” deputies heard a single gunshot and located Moreno, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies discharged their weapons and no one else was injured during the incident, according to the release.

The sheriff's office requested NSP to investigate the incident as an “in-custody death,” which requires a grand jury investigation per Nebraska state statute.

The incident is under investigation and no other details were immediately available.

In an interview with the Enterprise, Sheriff Mike Robinson said an investigation for an in-custody death is standard protocol.

"After we got there, I contacted the county attorney (Scott Vander Schaaf) and advised we had a possible in-custody death, we contacted State Patrol Investigative (Services) and called Douglas County CSI to process the scene," Robinson said. "And we started gathering information for our own internal."

The deputies on scene were allowed time off and offered counseling services following the incident, Robinson said. Their names have not been released.

Robinson said in-car video cameras and body cameras were utilized during the situation and reviewed to corroborate the details.
