NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION OPEN HOUSE MEETING – DRAFT 9/9/26 TAP-89(36) Fort Calhoun with Safe Transportation; C.N. 22926 The City of Fort Calhoun will hold a public open house regarding proposed improvements to the trail and sidewalk network within Fort Calhoun in Washington County. The public open house is planned at the Northern Lights Venue (310 N. 14 th Street, Fort Calhoun, NE 68023), Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Identified as Fort Calhoun with Safe Transportation, the proposed project is predominantly located along the corridors of 15th Street, 12th Street, Adams Street, and Clay Street. The proposed project would construct approximately 1.42 miles of new 10-foot-wide trail and 0.69 miles of 5-foot-wide sidewalk segments, as well as replace exiting segments of 5-foot-wide sidewalk with 10-foot-wide trail. Additional improvements would consist of sidewalk extensions, installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) at U.S. Highway 75 (US-75) and Lincoln Street and US-75 and Adams Street, culvert extensions, new curb and gutter, and new storm pipe installation. The purpose of this project is to improve the connectivity and safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other trail users within Fort Calhoun. The needs for this project include addressing safety and correcting poor access to safe, alternative modes of transportation to schools, parks, and city amenities. This project would be constructed under traffic with lane closures controlled by appropriate traffic control devices and practices. The City of Fort Calhoun will eliminate barriers to access by building sidewalk and curb ramps where required. Temporary sidewalk access disruptions may occur during construction. Notice of access disruptions would be provided in advance of the impact. Pedestrian protection and accommodations would be provided when applicable. Potential impacts to environmental resources are being evaluated for this project. Resources for review include, but are not limited to, cultural resources, wetlands and water resources, hazardous materials, farmland, threatened and endangered species, parks, and more. Impacts to these resources are yet to be determined. The proposed project would require the acquisition of additional property rights, which could include new right-of-way (ROW), permanent easements (PE), and/or temporary easements (TE). Access to adjacent properties would be maintained during construction but may be limited at times due to phasing requirements. If your property is impacted by this project, you will be contacted by a representative once the design footprint has been established. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin as early as spring of 2028, with completion as early as summer of 2029. This public open house is being held to provide information regarding the project and to receive the public’s input. All interested persons are invited to attend and present relevant comments and questions. Design information will be displayed and personnel from Fort Calhoun and NDOT will be present to answer questions and receive comments. The “open house” format allows the public to learn about the project and ask questions at their own pace at any time during the advertised hours, and leave as they wish. There will also be a recorded presentation available. The City of Fort Calhoun will make every reasonable accommodation to provide accessible meeting facilities, including arrangements for individuals who are hearing-impaired or visually challenged, or who have limited English proficiency, if notified by Tuesday, September 29, 2026. For those without internet access, information may be obtained at 110 S. 14 th Street, Fort Calhoun, NE 68023. The public is being encouraged to make suggestions or express concerns regarding this proposed project. Comments will be collected through October 28, 2026.
