Legion baseball games postponed by rain

Blair Post 154 opener called off

Much like during the high school spring season, Blair Post 154 had an American Legion baseball doubleheader called off Tuesday.
The Bears were scheduled to open the season against Springfield on Vets Field, but rain pushed the Junior and Senior Legion games to June 8.
While it was able to play its season openers last week, Fort Calhoun Post 348 also lost baseball games in Louisville to Tuesday's wet weather.
The Blair High School team, which was comprised of many of the same players, played 18 games March 17 through May 7, but also lost seven to cancellation.
“In baseball you need game reps, and it's hard to get those when you don't get to play games and then you have to practice in a gymnasium,” said BHS and Legion coach James Bilslend on May 5 after his prep team's last two regular season games were called off.
Instead of playing Springfield to start the season, the Post 154 Seniors were left hoping to get in Thursday's ballgame at Bellevue East to open the summer slate. A 10 a.m. Saturday home game against Ralston is next.
The Blair Juniors, meanwhile, are to play Ashland at 7 p.m. today on Vets Field after a Thursday night game against Waterloo-Valley.
Fort Calhoun's summer teams were set to play a Junior-Senior doubleheader on Thursday against Springfield. The Post 348 Pioneers were 0-1 in both age groups going into the game.
