Dar Sutherland, 88

Darwin Charles Sutherland (Dar), age 88, passed peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones, Oct. 9, 2023.

Dar was born Jan. 7, 1935 he grew up and did his schooling in Blair, Neb. Dar married Retha Plum in 1954 and they had three children together that they loved so much. Joined the Army in 1960 and completed his GED.

Dar was stationed in Frankfort, Germany, for two years where he completed his time in service from the Army in 1962. Dar was baptized, and confirmed in the Episcopalian Church.

In his free time Dar loved fishing with friends, taking annual trips to Canada and enjoyed woodworking. Dar was also a part of the Masons in the early 1970’s.

He was awarded Master Anglers award and trophy buck award as well as an Admiral for the Nebraska Great Navy.

Dar served on the Blair Volunteer Fire Department from December of 1968 to January of 1981. Dar worked as a carpenter for many years and built many homes in the Blair area including the home that his children were raised in. He also worked at Huntel for 26 years until he retired. During his 26 years of retirement he thoroughly enjoyed driving his grand children to school, wood working, and spending plenty of time fishing and spending time with loved ones and friends.

Proceeded in death by his parents John and Thelma Sutherland; two brothers, Burley and Cliff Sutherland; nephew, Joe Sutherland; and Retha Petersen (first wife, mother of their children).

He is survived by his brother, Dick (Marlene) Sutherland of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister, Roxann (Pat) Edwards of Brighton, Colo.; daughter, Michell (Jim) Lemen of Kansas City, Mo.; son, Roger (Linda) Sutherland of Blair, Neb.; son, Ty (Tracy) Sutherland of Mt. Olive, N.C.; grandchildren; Cory (Nichole) Flaherty, Jenny (Dennis) Weaver, Ian Lemen, Hannah Lemen, Ty (Chelsie) Sutherland II, Eli Sutherland, Maggie (Kaleb) Nicholson, Joel Greve; great-grandchildren, Alicia Flaherty, Breana Flaherty, Clara Flaherty, Caleb Adams, Sidney Adams, Ty Sutherland III, Whitley Sutherland, Emmy Alvarado, Braxton Nicholson, Charlie Nicholson, Deagan Nicholson; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and his dear friend Rebecca Finn.

Services will be held at Reach Church of Blair, Neb., Oct. 20, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. with lunch to follow. The family will continue celebrating his life following the lunch at the American Legion of Blair, Neb.. Good Shepherd Funeral & Cremation Services of Omaha, Neb., are handling arrangements. Memorials can be made to the family for later designations.
