Stemmermann Park hosted back-to-back days of Blair High School tennis matches April 17 and Thursday.
First, the Bears swept Cornerstone Christian 5-0. Twenty-four hours later, they topped Nebraska City 3-2.
Altogether, coach David Christensen's team went 7-2 April 17 against the Cougars. In scored matches, Abi Lundberg, Fiene Bakker and Roslyn Solano won at Nos. 1-3 singles — 8-0, 8-1 and 9-7, respectively.
Ana Dasa and Kylie Harvey, meanwhile, won their non-scoring singles matches by tiebreakers.
The BHS doubles team of Leah Chance and Shelby Wolff earned an 8-1 victory, too, while Ally Sullivan and Abby Leggott topped their Cornerstone Christian opposition, 8-2.
“I thought it was a pretty good matchup, but also we focused a lot on limiting our mistakes,” Sullivan said of the No. 1 doubles match. “We did better at that as the game went on.”
When did Leggott know her team was going to have a good day?
“When Ally got her first serve in,” she said, sharing a laugh with her playing partner.
With the win, the sophomore pairing improved to 4-8 together this season.
“I feel like we're doing really good together and we've improved a ton since the beginning,” Sullivan said, noting how the partners understand tennis better now than when they started the season last month.
“I always know that if I can't get to a ball, she can,” Leggott said. “I have confidence that she'll be able to get it.”
The Bears have gotten so comfortable together that they don't even really have to make decisions when they play. It's all natural chemistry.
“We don't usually both go toward the ball,” Leggott said. “We usually know who's going to get it. We can feel it.”
Against Nebraska City, Sullivan and she won another doubles match, 8-1. Chance and Wolff added a 9-8 win by 7-0 tiebreaker, while Lundberg won again at No. 1 singles — 8-1.
Bakker lost her No. 2 singles match 8-5, while Tailyn Anderson fell 9-8 after a tight, 7-5 tiebreaker.
The Bears next compete 4 p.m. today at Elkhorn. Junior varsity matches against the Antlers will occur at Stemmermann Park at the same time.
