Members of the Blair chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) are hoping to help educate the community on the importance of financial literacy.

Blair FBLA is planning a free financial literacy event at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Blair Public Library and Technology Center. Featured speakers will be Tom Bloomquist, relationship officer at Washington County Bank, and Craig Heuton of Edward Jones Investment.

Topics will include budgeting, debit, credit and investments.

The event is part of the FBLA chapter's annual project for which they'll write a report and submit during the state FBLA conference, FBLA member Jenna Murch-Shafer said. The students also helped with a financial literacy traveling exhibit for kids, which was on display at the library earlier this year and gave presentations to Otte Blair Middle School students last month.

“We're trying to reach as many people as we can, so we're hoping that the different events that we're hosting that we'll attract different groups in the community,” FBLA member Sophia Baedke said.

The Nov. 30 event is open to the public and any age group.

“For any kids that are there, it's to get them off to a good start,” Baedke said. “For adults, saying it's not too late, you can do things to help improve your financial situation.”

FBLA member Derek Wang said he hopes the event will help those who attend.

“We hope to give (the public) financial skills, budgeting skills, how to manage money and we also hope to teach them how to invest and use their money wisely,” he said.
