BHS hosts boys basketball clinic

Campers work on their skills across 3 days

Blair boys basketball coach Chris Whitwer hadn't had time to go over the numbers Wednesday, but he felt the gym looked the way it should during clinic week.
It was filled with enthusiastic basketball players.
“Obviously, we always want the kids excited about basketball,” Whitwer said.
The Bears hosted three sessions May 31 through June 2. High school athletes took the court first before middle school kids going into grades 6-8 and then grades 3-5 last.
Older campers and coaches, Whitwer said, were expected to have a better idea of what next season may look like after the clinic. It also prepared the BHS summer rosters for their upcoming offseason leagues and team camps.
Every kid, however, should have been able to leave with drills they can use to improve their skills at home or at the park.
“The main goal of summer is, especially for the youth, giving them some things to work on,” Whitwer said. “Have them love the game.”
During the second middle school session, the coach said he could identify some up-and-coming basketball prospects for the high school team.
“We've got younger kids that you can see the excitement,” he said.
Several of those campers were wearing state tournament T-shirts the Bears had made after each of the past two successful seasons in Class B.
“When they're wearing those coming in or previous camp shirts, our basketball apparel, it's always good to see,” Whitwer said. “For sure.”
Coach Matt Aschoff's girls basketball clinic, meanwhile, was scheduled to start Monday this week, continuing through Thursday. It, too, has three sessions for the various age groups.
