Blair loses to Bennington, Lincoln Northwest

The Class B No. 10 Blair baseball team's winning streak didn't hit six games Monday during the Eastern Midlands Conference (EMC) Tournament.
As it turned out, the Bears (5-7 overall) weren't able to start a new one Tuesday either.
First, on Monday, BHS lost at No. 2 Bennington, 5-2. Coach John Roan's team scored the first run during the top of the third inning, but the 12-1 Badgers answered with four of their own during the bottom half to advance in EMC Tourney play.
Brady Brown scored one of BHS' two runs in defeat, while also notching two hits. Nate Wachter and Lucas Matejka added singles, too, while Owen Mann scored the other run after a walk.
Bears pitcher Dylan Swanson threw all six innings against Bennington, striking out five but also allowing a home run to the Badgers' Tyler Wise.
Monday's matchup between the EMC rivals was the teams' first after a pair of weather postponements wiped out the previously scheduled meetings.
Blair and Lincoln Northwest hadn't crossed paths in 2024 before Tuesday's consolation tournament game at Sherman Field in Lincoln either. The Falcons, however, won the first matchup, 4-2.
Swanson, J'Shawn Unger and Tanner Jacobson notched two hits apiece, and Brown and Jake Gaskill knocked in runs, but it wasn't enough. The two-run loss was the Bears' seventh of the season.
Blair next plays noon Saturday against Hastings at Vets Field. A junior varsity game will follow.
