Four of Arlington High School's five golfers made their career debuts Friday.
The Eagles' one player with experience, Sarah Rhea, shot her team's low score at Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer — 121 strokes. Senior Kayla Schwedhelm carded 153 swings, while Teleri Stamper and Grace Jones took 158 apiece over 18 holes. Kaelyn Kinnaman shot a 167, too.
While their scores were far from the top of the leaderboard during the West Point-Beemer Invitational, the Eagles “were in great moods and looking forward to the next competition,” coach Cailyn Johnson said.
Rhea's goal was to shoot nine holes in the 60s and she succeeded, accumulating just 58 over the front nine.
“She was ecstatic,” her coach said.
Overall, AHS' student athletes used their drivers and 7-iron clubs well, Johnson added.
“They were most successful when they committed to their choice of club and trusted it,” she said.
Rhea was a resource for her teammates, too, answering their questions and concerns.
The season-opening meet was also a debut for the coach. Johnson is replacing former coach Jason Wiese this fall.
“The weather could not have been better and I enjoyed watching all golfers,” she said of her experience. “It was nice to see them in action, and hearing how excited they were when something worked out in their favor.”
