BHS finishes 11th at home invitational

Bennington High School won the Blair Invitational in 18 holes Monday at River Wilds Golf Club with 358 strokes.
Julia Karmazin of Elkhorn North, Columbus Scotus' Cecilia Arndt and Olivia Lovegrove of Lincoln Christian, however, had to play more after carding 73 apiece. Karmazin won the playoff and the tournament, while the host Bears finished 11th out of 14 teams with 427 swings.
Senior Mallory Stirek led coach Ross Udey's BHS squad with a 94, which finished a single stroke outside of the top-15.
“I've got other tournaments out here, I know,” she said, expressing disappointment in her round, but also looking forward.
The Bear took 47 shots on both the front nine holes and the back Monday.
“I had some good shots and I, definitely, had my share of bad shots,” Stirek said. “It was an ugly 94.”
Carrie Truhlsen, meanwhile, shot a 105 for her Blair lineup.
“I feel like I played pretty good, but the score didn't really show it, I guess,” she said.
The golfer was pleased with her tee shots, though.
“It makes me feel better because I have more confidence,” said Truhlsen, explaining what a good swing off of the tee can do. “When it goes bad, my first shot, I just kind of go downhill from there.”
BHS' Mackenzie Storjohann added 112 swings across 18 holes, while Addie Stirek and Lillian Tiedgen finished with 116 and 124, respectively.
The Bears' Tessa Nicholson added a 125, Ally Collins had 132 strokes and Quinn Thompson carded a 133 on the team's home course.
Blair will work to improve next when it plays 9 a.m. Tuesday at Fremont Golf Club.
“I'm going to have to figure out my putting at some point,” Mallory Stirek said, cracking a smile while remaining completely serious.
