The Fort Calhoun Senior Legion baseball team went 1-2 Friday and Saturday during the Lewis & Clark Classic in Yankton, S.D.
Coach Jerry Wellwood's Zig Drywall ballclub fell short of the Yankton Pool's site championship game Saturday, dropping its semifinal 4-3 to the host. Post 348 scored three first inning runs, but couldn't hold on as the home team scored four runs across the next three frames to ultimately pull out the one-run victory.
Calhoun's Alex Christensen and Nathan Kramer produced two hits apiece in defeat.
Zig Drywall started the Yankton tournament with a 1-1 split of its first two games against Madison, S.D., and Blair. The Seniors beat Madison first Friday, 7-3.
Wellwood's team trailed the game early, 3-0, but evened the score during the bottom of the second inning. Then, in the fourth frame, it took the lead.
Chase Premer started the inning with a single before Kramer and Sam Genoways added their own from there to load the bases. JT Mlnarik next supplied the go-ahead RBI single through the left side of the infield on a full-count pitch.
Calhoun added three more runs during the inning and won by the same tally. Thaddeus Kowal earned the victory on the mound.
It was Mlnarik, however, who took the 4-1 loss against Blair. Zig Drywall led 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but fell behind on Brevin Leggott's three-run swing.
Logan Schwab notched Calhoun's only RBI against Post 154, while both Jordan Back and Kramer had two hits. The Seniors fell to 0-3 against Blair this summer in defeat.
Zig Drywall earns win
Fort Calhoun earned a win before its road trip to Yankton, though.
Post 348 bested Waterloo-Valley on the road June 4, 6-1. Genoways, Levi Lasher and Kenny Wellwood combined to pitch the seven inning game, giving up just one earned run with eight strikeouts.
Offensively, Zig Drywall turned a 1-0 third-inning deficit into a five-run win with three runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth. AJ Duros, Premer, Genoways and Christensen all logged RBIs during the win. Back, Premer and Kramer all hit doubles, too, while Mlnarik walked three times.
