I won't name names because I didn't ask permission, but a Blair High School sports parent brought up the College Football Playoff to me in the parking lot on Dec. 20.
As you may know, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish opened the newly expanded postseason football bracket with a first-round game against Indiana that night. I knew it was happening, too, but couldn't offer any more opinions about any of the other teams involved the next day because I, simply put, had no idea how things were going to shake out.
Truth is, most of the sports I consume these days involves the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Green Bay Packers and those Washington County kids I write about every day. I can't seem to find much time for anything else.
So, while that's a little sad, it's exciting knowing the Huskers return to bowl competition Saturday at Yankee Stadium, which is a real sentence not spoken since 1962 when Nebraska beat Miami in the Gotham Bowl.
Now, I must admit, I have no idea who's wearing scarlet and cream in the Bronx, N.Y., tomorrow when NU faces off against Boston College. I've watched, like, two Creighton Bluejay and Nebraska basketball games combined all season, so there's just no chance I would have been able to keep up with all of the transfer portal happenings.
But, still, its Nebraska football in a classic stadium during the holiday season. Who can hate on that besides the people traveling to the game who would have preferred somewhere sunny?
In totality, college football is in a really weird spot right now. It's definitely not the 1990s anymore, but there's still a bit of charm attached to it that I don't get from watching the NFL on Fox on Sundays.
So, while I haven't watched much playoff action, I'm looking forward to what I hope is a bowl victory for the Huskers on Saturday. I may not be able to watch it live due to work obligations, but, hey, YouTube TV is promising me to record it.
On a side note, I'll return to Washington County column topics next week. I promise.
