Zam Driver Turned Writer: A great time of year

Posted

Every summer I get asked if I'm enjoying my break.
It's a fair question considering the high school sports schedule is, essentially, done with official competition during June and July. But it also ignores the amount of time kids have for athletics without their school schedules.
What I'm saying is, “Summer time is no break for the Enterprise sports editor.”
Neither is the time between fall and winter, and winter and spring. During those so-called “breaks” between seasons, I'm racing around from practice-to-practice and planning preview sections. It's like studying before a big test. It's pressure-packed.
Right now, though — when I really think about it — I'd say is my break. The gap between the last basketball games before Christmas and New Years Day just feels different.
Granted, I'm still busy. First, I've got to fill sports pages without the actual action of sports. Second, we here at the newspaper offices have big projects coming together with deadlines approaching.
The timing is interesting, for sure.
But work days during the holidays, ultimately, just feel like half days to me. I don't know if it's because any holiday tournament games I attend are during the day rather than at night or because the humans at home have Christmas movies on the TV when I get home.
People just seem in better spirits during this time of year. They're relaxed.
And, you know what, I'm relaxed. I'm happy.
This is the end of 2022, but I've got a feeling I'll be ready for 2023 when we get there shortly. It's been an enjoyable time, soaking in the holiday cheer, but sports are my business and they'll be going full bore here again soon.
