After the water balloon toss, but before popsicles, Arlington High School softball coach Janelle Lorsch wanted to commemorate another trip around the sun with a photo.
“Because it is my birthday, we do have to take one birthday selfie,” she said Thursday morning at the Two Rivers Sports Complex.
The group picture capped the Eagles' annual three-day youth camp. More than 30 youngsters took part with several high school players lending a helping hand as bats were swung and bases run.
“I have celebrated my birthday at the ballpark since I can remember,” Lorsch said. “I've had camp on my birthday. I've gone to the Women's College World Series on my birthday. I've coached youth on my birthday. I've played, I've umpired on my birthday.”
Essentially, she felt good Thursday.
“I'm meant to be here on my birthday,” the coach said.
Before water balloon fun, though, campers worked on base running to close out the camp. They also took swings at softballs placed on tees.
Overall, Lorsch said each of the three days of camp presented “perfect” weather for the sessions, though she wouldn't have minded playing through rain showers for area farmers. The setting did provide for an enthusiastic group of softball players, though.
“The kids were excited,” Lorsch said. “It's fun to do camp at the start of the summer because they're excited. They are so excited to do all of the fun things.”
Arlington Youth Sports softball seasons continue through the month of June with home and away games, too.
