Winter high school sports practices began Monday at Blair, Arlington and Fort Calhoun High Schools.
In addition to boys wrestling, Blair and Arlington start their girls programs this winter. Head coaches Erich Warner of BHS and Doug Hart of AHS will oversee both teams, while the Bears' Terry Bellemy and Eagles' Madison Wakefield will lend their coaching efforts to the girls, too.
The Blair girls wrestling program starts its inaugural season alongside the boys Dec. 1. The home triangular with Fremont and Papillion-La Vista South starts at 5 p.m.
The Arlington boys and girls wrestling teams start competition Dec. 2 at Columbus Lakeview.
Fort Calhoun wrestling, meanwhile, starts its season Dec. 3 at Bennington. The Pioneers are again coached by Drew Welchert.
All six Washington County high school boys and girls basketball coaches return this season, too. Blair coaches Matt Aschoff and Chris Whitwer will lead teams against Luke Brenn and Tyler Spitser's Arlington teams during a pair of Nov. 21 exhibition games at BHS. It starts with the 5:30 p.m. girls game.
Then, on Dec. 1, Aschoff's BHS girls host Omaha Mercy in their season opener. The boys, meanwhile, host the Ralston Rams on Dec. 3 after the girls' second game of the winter.
Both Arlington basketball teams, meanwhile, officially start their seasons Dec. 1 with home games against West Point-Beemer.
Fort Calhoun basketball coaches Marty Plum and TJ O'Connor will have their teams in action for Nov. 28 home exhibition games as well. Plum's girls team then plays at Fremont Bergan on Dec. 2 before O'Connor's squad plays the Knights in the nightcap.
Arlington and Blair also have established co-ops with Fremont High School swimming. The Tigers' first event is a home dual Dec. 1.
