Fort Calhoun softball player Kaitlyn Welchert stepped into the batter's box twice Thursday during the Pioneers' third inning at Syracuse.
The slugger reached base to lead off the frame before coming back to hit a bases-clearing grand slam. The eight-run FCHS inning turned a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead.
Coach Mandy Taylor's squad went onto win on the road, 15-3, after just four innings. The Pioneers are 4-3.
Before Welchert's homer, Calhoun's Anna Taylor, Bryanna Bender and Adriana Hernandez combined to plate four runs themselves during the third frame. Taylor hit into a run-scoring error, Bender plated two Pioneers and Hernandez notched an RBI single.
Then, during the fourth frame, FCHS scored six more runs. Hernandez, Sam Brewer and Taylor provided RBI swings, while Welchert showcased run-scoring patience with a bases-loaded walk.
Kaylee Taylor also notched an RBI single against the Rockets, while Anna Taylor and Lucie Larsen shared pitching duties for the Pioneers.
Coach Taylor's team next plays today against Raymond Central. The home game starts at 6:30 p.m.
