Rain pushed back the start of the Washington County softball postseason by a day, but both Fort Calhoun and Arlington completed subdistrict play Tuesday evening.
The Class C No. 2 Pioneers went 2-0 at home and will play Friday in a to-be-determined district finals best-of-three series.
The Eagles, however, traveled to Central City and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to close out their fall campaign.
FCHS wins 2 by run rule
Fort Calhoun outscored its Class C-6 Subdistrict opposition — Ord and Tekamah-Herman — by a combined score of 26-5 Tuesday. It first beat the Chanticleers 13-5 in six innings before topping the Tigers 13-0 in three during the tournament final.
Coach Mandy Taylor’s Pioneers are 19-5 overall and — as of 9 p.m. Tuesday — sit third in the Class C wild card points standings. They’ll host their three-game district finals series on Friday.
Against Ord, though, Emily Warfield notched a double and a triple, finishing with four RBIs. Tacey Belina and Kayla Kratz had two RBIs apiece, too, as Kratz earned the pitching win.
Izzy Greenough, Belina, Warfield and Kratz, meanwhile, had two RBIs apiece against Tekamah. Belina also claimed the pitching win.
Eagles fall by 1
Arlington’s Class C-3 Subdistrict first-round game against St. Paul came down to the final inning Tuesday in Central City.
Ahead 1-0 entering the final frame, the Eagles allowed the Wildcats’ only two runs during the top half of the seventh. Finley Timm reached base for coach Janelle Lorsch’s team during the bottom half, but AHS’ season ended on a strikeout.
Adrianna Mincer, notably, notched the Eagles’ lone RBI during the fifth inning, plating fellow senior Kallan Reed.
Arlington closes out the fall 14-14 overall. It was 19th in the Class C wild card point standings as of 9 p.m.
Blair starts postseason Thursday
Class B Blair will play its first postseason game 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Blair Youth Sports Complex. The top-seeded Bears will play either Omaha Gross or Plattsmouth during the B-4 District Tournament semifinals.
The three-game final series will begin Friday at 11 a.m., according to the official NSAA bracket.
