STATE UPDATE: AHS boys track earns Class C runner-up finish

Eagles' Hailey O'Daniel wins gold medal, too

The Arlington High School track and field boys earned Class C runner-up status Saturday during the NSAA State Championships at Omaha Burke Stadium.
Junior Hailey O’Daniel added the Eagles’ second gold medal of the meet, too, as her teammates outscored the third-place Lincoln Lutheran boys, 49-46.5. Chase County earned the team title with 65 points.
After Arlington's first event win of the state meet on Friday, O’Daniel won the 1,600-meter run in 5:14.99 — a new school record. Her effort led coach Kyle Buckingham’s girls team to a seventh-place finish overall.
Nolan May, Kaden Foust, Dallin Franzluebbers and Kevin Flesner, meanwhile, all scored team points to push the Arlington boys forward on the second-day of the two-day Class C Championships. May was third in the 1,600 run, Foust was second in the long jump with a school-record jump and Flesner was fifth in the 800 run.
The trio joined forces with Franzluebbers to earn fourth in the 1,600 relay, too, securing the runner-up trophy.
On Friday, the Eagles’ 3,200-meter relay squad — also Flesner, Foust, Franzluebbers and May — earned AHS' first gold medal of the meet. May was second in the individual 3,200, too, ahead of sixth-place Kolby Tighe.
Foust earned fourth in the 400 dash as well, while Hayley Arp was fourth in the girls’ discus and Whitney Wollberg took sixth in the pole vault.
Two Blair athletes earned state titles during the week of NSAA State Championships, too. Ethan Baessler won the Class B 100- and 200-meter dashes on Thursday, while Reece Ewoldt won the 1,600 run for a gold medal.
Ewoldt also earned second in the 3,200 run on Wednesday. Reese Beemer (100 dash) and Greta Galbraith (pole vault) claimed silver medals as well with Blair taking seventh in both the boys and girls team standings.
Fort Calhoun, meanwhile, had one state medalist Thursday. Emilee Thayer-Mencke took eighth in the Class B high jump.
