Two Washington County high school athletes earned medals Wednesday during the first day of the NSAA Class B State Track and Field Championships in Omaha.
Blair junior Hayden Daggett was fourth in the 400-meter dash, stopping the clock in 49.2 seconds. He was 10th in the high jump, too, while also qualifying for the 200 dash finals in fourth during preliminary races.
Fort Calhoun’s Afton Byelick, meanwhile, made the most of her first state qualification with a seventh-place showing in the pole vault. The Pioneer cleared the bar set at 10 feet, 6 inches, securing a spot on the podium for top-eight finishers.
After six scored events, the Blair boys are tied for 17th in the team standings. FCHS, meanwhile, has yet to score in Class B competition.
The Pioneer girls, however, are tied for 22nd with the Bears yet to score.
The Waverly boys and Norris girls are both first through the first of two days of B competition at Burke Stadium. The meet continues 9 a.m. Thursday with more field events before Arlington starts Class C competition Friday.
