Sports in brief: Former Husker leads hoops camp at YMCA

Former Nebraska Cornhusker Wes Wilkinson spent his weekend in Blair teaching kids basketball skills Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Wilkinson Hoops, Blair Basketball Club and the Blair Family YMCA partnered to put on the free, two-day skills training event. First- and second-graders played basketball from noon to 1 p.m. each day before third- through fifth-graders learned 1 to 2:30 and sixth- through eighth-graders practiced their abilities 2:30 to 4.
Wilkinson, a 6-foot-10 Grand Island native, played four seasons at Nebraska. Before playing professionally overseas, he capped his college career in 2006, averaging 11.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game for the Big 12 Cornhuskers.

AHS, FCHS celebrate fall sports
Arlington and Fort Calhoun High Schools will celebrate the start of fall sports Friday.
The Arlington Eagles Booster Club will host softball, volleyball and football scrimmages beginning at 5 p.m. Softball starts at 5 at the Two Rivers Sports Complex before volleyball at 6 and football at 7 p.m. A cross-country time trial run is set for 8 a.m. Saturday.
Fort Calhoun, meanwhile, is set to host its annual Fall Sports Kickoff event Friday. Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. before team introductions at 6 and the football scrimmage at 7.

Arlington grad continues Arlo 2v2 tourney
The 2022 edition of the Arlo 2v2 basketball tournament took place Saturday on an outdoor court at Arlington High School.
Zach Helms, a 2018 AHS graduate, organizes the event started and continued annually. Saturday's tourney was the fourth 2-on-2 basketball showcase.
Current and former Washington County high school talent have taken part in the past. College basketball players have also participated.

River Wilds hosts Club Championship
River Wilds Golf Club hosted its annual Club Championship on Saturday and Sunday.
Players were to complete 18 holes each day across men's gross, senior gross, ladies gross, men's handicap and ladies handicap divisions of play. Tee offs were each day at 8 a.m.

'Midtown Mayhem' is Saturday
The annual Midtown Mayhem 3-on-3 Outdoor Basketball Tournament is Saturday on the Washington County Bank parking lots in Blair.
The second-grade through adult games start at 9 a.m. Tourney contact Craig Heuton (craig.heuton@edwardjones.com) said about 40 teams had signed up as of Saturday.
