Mavs' Dreher pitches in LSU upset
Blair High School graduate Matt Dreher earned the save Saturday as his Omaha Mavericks upset college baseball's No. 3 team, LSU.
The left-handed pitcher threw during the ninth inning, protecting a 5-0 lead in front of 10,318 fans in Baton Rouge, La. The Tigers scored four runs during the frame, but couldn't tie the game as Dreher notched a strikeout and induced the game-ending flyout into the outfield.
The former BHS and Post 154 American Legion lefty allowed just one hit during the inning with one walk and one wild pitch. It was his second appearance of the season for the Mavs.
Elsewhere in NCAA Division I college baseball, Blair grad J'Shawn Unger has yet to take the mound for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but the right-handed pitcher is No. 37 on coach Will Bolt's roster, according to Huskers.com.
At Creighton, Shea Wendt — another former Bear — has made two starts on the mound and has a 1.5 ERA across six innings. As of Sunday, he leads the Bluejays in strikeouts with 12.
BHS' Brady Brown and Nate Wachter wear Nos. 29 and 41 at South Dakota State, respectively. Brown recently made his college debut against Pacific on Sunday.
Notably, former BHS softball standout Nessa McMillen has played in 16 games for Nebraska with nine starts in the field, too. She's scored four runs and is 1-for-1 on stolen bases this season, too.
