Armadillos debut in Farmland League
The Arlington Armadillos of the Farmland Basketball League debuted Sunday with a 90-76 road loss to the North Bend Ambush.
Former Arlington High School standout and Nebraska Wesleyan guard Jackson Borgmann led all scorers with 27 points in defeat. His team is in its first year with Zach Helms acting as a player and team manager.
AHS grads Skyler Andrews, Zach Fitz, Joshua Hilgenkamp, Zach O'Flaherty, Trevor Toebben, Logan Vie and Landon Walkenhorst are also members of the Armadillos roster along with Ben Fuller and Matthew Nelson. Their next game is 6 p.m. Sunday against West Point at AHS.
Overall, there are seven Farmland teams. The communities of Dodge, Howells, Pender and Wisner are involved in addition to those already mentioned. The league is in its 15th season with a Blair team winning the inaugural tournament title in 2009.

Statewide deer harvest down in 2022
The 2022 Nebraska November firearm deer hunting season was down 9 percent compared to 2021 according to preliminary statewide check-in numbers.
A recent Game and Parks release states 33,866 deer were harvested during the nine-day, Nov. 12-20 season compared to 37,053 a year ago. Though overall trends were down, southeast Nebraska saw a 2-percent uptick.
The state's mule deer buck harvest decreased by 10 percent with 4,875 taken, while the whitetail buck harvest dropped 12 percent to 18,942. The antlerless mule deer numbers were down 12 percent, but the antlerless white-tailed deer harvest increased by 1 percent from 2021.
The state's archery season closes Dec. 31, as does the muzzleloader season which began Dec. 1. The late antlerless season will run Jan. 1-15, while the River Antlerless late season will run Jan. 1-31.
Hunters and landowners are also encouraged to offer their feedback on big game issues during upcoming public information meetings. The three-hour, in-person meetings will include an open-house hour, a biologist's presentation, and a question-and-answer session.
The nearest scheduled big game information meeting to Washington County is 5 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Schramm Education Center Classroom south of Gretna.

NSAA names interim executive director
Jennifer Schwartz is the NSAA's Interim Executive Director.
The activities association's board of directors were scheduled to take formal action to approve the current Associate Director of the NSAA to the position during a Wednesday meeting in Norfolk. She will begin her new duties July 1 following the retirement of current executive director Jay Bellar.
An NSAA release states Schwartz brings an abundance of institutional knowledge to the position after serving as a member of the NSAA staff for more than 20 years.
“I am honored to serve as the interim Executive Director of the NSAA and continue to provide great opportunities for student participants throughout the state of Nebraska,” she said.
