DeSoto to close for 4-day managed hunt
The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge hosts an antlerless muzzleloader deer hunt Dec. 27-30.
“During the hunt, all refuge roads and nature trails will be closed beyond the visitor center to ensure public safety and facilitate a white-tailed deer hunt,” a recent DeSoto release stated.
The visitor center will still be open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the hunt, including Sunday, to accommodate visitors. Those interested in participating in the muzzleloader can contact supervisory park ranger Peter Rea by phone (712-388-4803) or email (peter_rea@fws.gov).
“The refuge facilitates these hunts in cooperation with the Iowa Depart of Natural Resources and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission,” the release noted. “Hunting is used as a management tool to control the number of deer on the refuge.”
