BHS, FCHS win Freshman State games
Blair and Fort Calhoun fielded teams last weekend during The Freshman State Softball Tournament at the new Sandhills Global Youth Complex in Lincoln.
The Bears finished 2-3-1 overall Sunday after an 11-4 bracket-play loss to a Hastings St. Cecilia team. They previously defeated Grand Island Central Catholic 9-4 and Malcolm 13-1 after a 7-7 tie against the Elkhorn White, according to GameChanger stat-keeping.
The BHS team lost its first two games of the three-day tourney to Omaha Skutt — 6-3 — and Gretna East Gold — 12-0. Casey Mertz, Olivia Bacon, Hadly Schueth, Vivianne Shelton, Brooklyn Valien, Jennessy Knapp, Emma Hernandez, Tilde Hall, Taryn Beyerink, CeCe Henn, Addelyn Hoffer and Elise Redfern made up the Bears' roster.
The FCHS Pioneers, meanwhile, went 3-1 in Lincoln. They started 3-0 with wins against Omaha Roncalli-Duchesne (10-3), Raymond Central (13-4) and the Waverly White (12-1) before a 8-4 loss to the Bennington Badgers.
Lillian Spore, Dakota Cheloha, Stella Greenough, Madison Bach, Ella Dworak, Isabel Wray, Tinsley Ross, Cam Christensen, Marley DeMilt, Teagan Turley, Rylie Keyser, Sydney Klein and Olive Hanford were members of the Pioneers' roster.
At the end of tournament play, Millard North Blue won the Class A title, while Lincoln Northeast and Papillion-La Vista South White won the Silver and Bronze brackets, respectively.
In Class B/C, Gretna East's Gold and Black earned co-champion status. Lincoln Standing Bear won the Silver Bracket and St. Cecilia took the Bronze.

Town teams play in tourney
Both the Arlington Spartans and Blair Dawgs town team baseball squads are playing during the Dodge County Fair Baseball Tournament this weekend.
The Spartans were scheduled to play West Point on Thursday in Scribner before the Dawgs face Wahoo today at 7 p.m. Competition continues 4:30 p.m. Saturday with Scribner against Thursday's winner and at 7 p.m. when Friday's victors meet.
The fair tournament's title game is 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Blair's Sunday afternoon result against the Twins in Omaha Adult Baseball League play was unavailable. The team is also scheduled to host the Giants at 10:30 a.m. Sunday on Vets Field.
