The Arlington, Blair and Fort Calhoun High School softball teams combined to go 11-3 during the first three days of the 2023 season.
The Eagles (4-1 overall), Class B No. 1 Bears (4-1) and Pioneers (3-1) were unable to follow-up on that success Monday and Tuesday, however, as temperatures exceeded what the NSAA allows for outdoor activities.
The association uses a Wet Bulb Globe Thermometer to determine appropriate playing conditions. It “is an all-inclusive measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight, which takes into account ambient temperature, humidity, sun angle, wind speed, cloud cover (solar radiation),” according to an NSAA document.
As a result of the high temperatures, Arlington was unable to host Logan View on Tuesday. The junior varsity and varsity games were rescheduled to Monday at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
Blair, meanwhile, was forced to look into new dates for games against both Omaha Skutt and Lincoln Northwest. The JV and varsity games on the Skyhawks' field will now be 5 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
The varsity game with Northwest will be 6 p.m. Sept. 26 in Blair.
Fort Calhoun also had home games thwarted by the weather. It was supposed to host Elkhorn North and Tekamah-Herman on Monday for a triangular. A new date had not been publicly announced as of press time.
