The Blair High School baseball team got back on track on Senior Night.
Before celebrating Tanner Jacobson, Nate Wachter, Brady Brown, Dylan Swanson, Blaine Rosenbaum and J'Shawn Unger, coach John Roan's Bears topped Class B No. 6 Omaha Gross, 7-4, at Vets Field. BHS had lost three games in a row — including two to teams with losing records — but improved to 6-8 overall with the upset.
Swanson, a left-handed Doane University recruit, earned the complete game pitching win, striking out five batters across seven innings. He allowed just one earned run.
The Bears, meanwhile, scored six earned runs and seven overall. They started with a three-run bottom of the second frame.
Unger led off, putting the ball in play and beating a Cougar throw to first base. Carter Saylor hit the ball through the infield next, setting up Rosenbaum, who plated both Blair runners with a shot down the first base line.
After a Lucas Matejka groundout moved him to third base, Rosenbaum scored a 3-0 Bears advantage on Owen Mann's sacrifice fly.
Coach Roan's lineup added a run during the third inning and moved ahead 6-0 with two more during the fifth frame. Gross responded with four runs during the top of the sixth before Blair pushed its advantage back out to the final margin with another tally in the bottom half.
Ultimately, Rosenbaum finished with three RBIs on a 1-for-2 night as Wachter, Unger, Saylor and Mann plated a run apiece. Wachter, Unger and Saylor finished with two hits apiece, too, while Brown scored two runs.
Jacobson walked three times as well.
The Bears had Tuesday and Wednesday off, but were scheduled to play at Crete on Thursday. They compete during an Ashland-Greenwood triangular Saturday, starting with a 1:30 p.m. game against the third team — Elkhorn Mount Michael — at Jack Anderson Ballpark.
