Washington County high school marksmen and women start competition today during the 55th Annual Cornhusker High School and Junior High School Trapshoot in Doniphan.
The championship event officially started Thursday with a junior high shoot, but continues today with Blair Youth Shooting Sports (BYSS), the Fremont trap team and others from across the region taking aim at clay pigeons from 16 yards out. On Saturday, grades 9-12 competition continues with 75 more shots from handicap distances to complete the event.
“This event carries with it a long and bright tradition of safety, sportsmanship and teamwork,” Cornhusker Shoot Director Rachel Carlson wrote for the event's program. “For some of you this will be a familiar adventure, and for others this will be your first visit.”
Contestants are shooting for a chance to win the Cornhusker Trapshoot Cup. Landen Nowak of North Platte won it last year.
“Each year the village of Doniphan rockets from a population of 800 to accommodate approximately 2,500 participants and their coaches and families,” Carlson continued in her program address. “Such a large event would not be possible without the support of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association, volunteers, and donors.”
Washington County's Kalvin Kies, Harry Kies, Zane Gerrish were individual medalists at the 2024 shoot, while Riley Brodersen, Triston Clausen and Tyler Hume contributed to a fourth-place BYSS team finish in the handicap standings.
