The Zig Drywall Senior Legion baseball team was a run short Tuesday night in Fort Calhoun.
Post 348 built a 2-0 lead, but it couldn't earn a victory against Omaha Roncalli, losing 3-2 on its home diamond. The loss dropped coach Jerry Wellwood's team to 6-7 this season.
“We all need to have better approaches at the plate,” centerfielder AJ Duros said.
Zig Drywall had three opportunities at the plate to tie or retake the lead after falling behind during the top of the fifth frame. Both JT Mlnarik and Logan Schwab occupied bases with one out during the sixth inning, but neither scored.
Roncalli then put together a 1-2-3 seventh inning, striking out back-to-back Calhoun batters to end the game after a leadoff pop out.
Before all of that, though, the home team earned a two-run advantage through two innings. Starting pitcher Sam Genoways first plated a run by sacrifice during the first frame.
Then, during the second, Duros put down a squeeze bunt with Jordan Back darting his way toward home plate for a 2-0 advantage.
“The first thought is just, 'Get it down. No matter what,'” Duros said of the play. “That's what they always preach, and that's the first thing that should go through any of our players' heads.”
The Post 348 lead lasted through the end of the fourth inning, but didn't extend beyond it as Roncalli earned a road victory.
Fort Calhoun played for a short while Monday, too, but the home game against Omaha Concordia was postponed once storms moved in. The game will now be played 7 p.m. Tuesday back on Zig Drywall's home diamond.
Next, though, Coach Wellwood's team continues Bob Gibson Memorial Juneteenth Tournament play, which began Thursday. Calhoun plays Texas Rangers Youth Academy at 5 p.m. and Omaha Buena Vista at 7:30 today on Buena Vista's field.

Juniors lose to Roncalli
The Zig Drywall Juniors played six innings against Omaha Roncalli on Tuesday, too, falling 13-2.
The run-rule loss dropped the Calhoun team's season record to 4-8.
Roncalli built a 9-0 lead before the home team cut its nine-run deficit to seven during the bottom of the third frame. Nathan Duros plated one run by sacrifice before his Zig Drywall teammate, Gannon Otte, scored on a wild pitch.
The visitors added to their lead from there, though, picking up the road win.
