The 12th-seeded Fort Calhoun High School football team fell at No. 5 Central City on Friday night during first-round Class C1 playoff action, 49-14.
The Pioneers (6-4 overall) fell behind 28-0 through one quarter, but battled back with a pair of touchdowns during the second. Quarterback Adam Elofson scored the first just 1:56 into the quarter, scrambling 18 yards on a fourth down play into the end zone.
Chase Bierman’s first of two extra-point kicks cut the Bison’s lead to 28-7.
Nearly 8 minutes of game time later, FCHS’ Blake Welchert scored on a 1-yard option play, pulling coach Zach Byrd’s team within 28-14.
The Pioneers stayed within two touchdowns thanks to the defensive effort of Kade Foy. The Calhoun defensive back intercepted two Central City throws into the end zone during the second quarter, including one just before halftime.
FCHS made another defensive stop to start the third quarter, but couldn’t turn the turnover on downs into offensive points. The Bison scored 21-straight points from there, ending Calhoun’s first playoff appearance since 2021.
