The Fort Calhoun boys basketball team improved to 4-3 Monday in its final game before the holiday break, topping Conestoga 66-41 on the road.
The Pioneers' offensive output was its highest of the season. Junior Grayson Bouwman scored a team-best 21 points with three 3-pointers and 10 made free throws, while senior Wyatt Appel tallied 16 points on shots made from the field.
FCHS' Glenn Hunter added 11 points, too, including six on buzzer-beaters. The senior nabbed a steal out of the air and sunk his first 3 at the end of the first quarter before capping the second with another long-range make. The second score put the Pioneers ahead 35-18 at the halftime break.
Zach Nelson concluded the third period's scoring with a 3-pointer, too, though it didn't come at the buzzer. The Calhoun senior finished with seven points, the same total accumulated by Austin Welchert. Declyn Otte added four points as well.
The Pioneers' next game is Dec. 29. They host a four-team holiday tournament with play starting at 2 p.m. The other teams involved are Centura, Howells-Dodge and Sandy Creek.
