OPPD utilizing drone technology to maintain system reliability

Omaha Public Power District is using drone technology to help ensure our customers have power when they need it.

The UAV RECON, which stands for unmanned aerial vehicle reconnaissance, provides a cost-effective way to examine a variety of OPPD power lines and structures and identify issues in need of maintenance. This allows OPPD to be proactive with repair or replacement of this equipment before it interrupts electric service.

The UAV took off Tuesday in Blair. It was expected to inspect approximately 450 structures over the week, weather permitting. The drone takes high resolution color images, while looking for potential problems.

Using the UAV, OPPD will examine transmission structures throughout Washington, Douglas, Cass, Otoe, Johnson, and Richardson counties.
