The Arlington High School baseball team dug itself into a hole Monday during its season opener.
Class C No. 6 Wayne earned a 4-0 lead through one inning and won at home, 5-1. The game, originally set for the Washington County Fairgrounds, was played on the Blue Devils' home diamond as the Eagles' dries out from last week's snow.
“Errors got the best of us in the first inning. Cost us four runs,” first-year AHS head coach Justin Meyer stated. “Then we settled in, giving up one run the rest of the game.”
The Eagles' response to early adversity was enough for him to give the Eagles a passing grade overall.
“So, I’d say I’m pleased with how we played,” Meyer stated. “Got runners on, just didn’t have the clutch hit to drive them in.”
Arlington scored its lone run during the sixth inning, while trailing 5-0. Luke Sharp scored it. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a double, while Henry Lancaster was 1-for-2 with a double, too.
AHS senior Tim Halley picked up a hit in the opener, too, going 1-for-3 to start the season.
Junior Jackson Stosich, meanwhile, earned opening-day pitching duties for the Eagles, throwing five frames in Wayne. He allowed seven hits, but just one earned run, striking out four batters.
Wes Monke then came on to pitch the sixth for Arlington, allowing no hits and no runs.
“Very pleased with how we pitched,” Coach Meyer stated.
The Eagles — who had two Omaha North tournament games called off last week, too — were scheduled to host Tekamah-Herman on Thursday and next compete Saturday at an Omaha Roncalli triangular. The games with the Pride and Elkhorn Mount Michael start at 10 a.m.
