Senior Britt Nielsen finished just four points shy of K.C. Hilgenkamp's single-game scoring record Saturday as the Arlington High School girls basketball team knocked off Omaha Brownell-Talbot, 58-34.
The 5-foot-11 forward scored the Eagles first nine points against the Raiders and finished with 35 overall, threatening the current school record holder's mark from the 1997-98 season. Nielsen's career showing came on the same night AHS honored members of the 2000 state championship team, too.
“Well, I got the first one off and then I just felt hot from there,” the senior said.
She finished the first quarter with 17 points, added a free throw during the second and had 17 more points across the last two periods.
“I just kept shooting, I guess, and they went in,” Nielsen explained.
The Eagles went as their leading scorer did, producing a 26-14 advantage through one quarter and holding the 12-point advantage into halftime. Coach Tashia Wolf's team won the third period 11-9 and the fourth 16-6, too.
Nielsen said Arlington's goal as the game went on was to continue to run its offense.
“We didn't do it perfectly, but I think it's still something we're trying to work on even when we're up so much,” she said.
Emme Timm — who assisted Nielsen on many of her buckets — added 13 points during AHS' win against Brownell-Talbot, while Macy Wolf and Valeria Carvajal had five points apiece.
The 3-1 Eagles next play 6 p.m. today against Dougals County West at home. They also host Wahoo on Friday.
