Mercy-ruling

BHS girls soccer beats Lincoln Northwest 10-0

The Blair High School girls soccer team scored 10 goals in 51 minutes and 36 seconds Friday at Krantz Field.
Sophomore Brynn Ray tallied the first against 0-7 Lincoln Northwest in just 19 seconds before senior Kaitlyn Johnson netted the last with 28:24 left in the second half. The mercy-rule victory pushed the Bears' season record to 6-2 going into the Eastern Midlands Conference (EMC) Tournament.
“It was good practice,” Ray said. “We got touches on the ball.”
The forward booted the first soccer ball to find the back of the net from right to left, freezing the Falcons' goalkeeper in place.
“It's just a great way to start it out,” she said. “You go up in that 19 seconds and everybody is just up and cheering.”
It was the first of Ray's three goals during the first half. BHS scored nine total during the first 40 minutes of the regular season match.
“They just kept following in after,” the sophomore said.
Blair senior Allison Hernandez also scored three goals against Northwest, while Sally Kies notched two and Savanah Roan had one.
Johnson's lone goal later ended the match, but also served as the first of her career. The senior goalkeeper, who was substituted out from between the posts with Katie Kramer, has always primarily played on the defensive side of the field and hasn't expected too many opportunities to score.
Johnson, however, thought she may get her moment when she saw BHS' schedule this spring.
“I know there's a couple new schools, so that might be a chance,” the senior recalled thinking to herself.
Sure enough, the Bear delivered in her teams' last game before the start of the EMC tourney. Coach Nick Hall's squad was scheduled to play Elkhorn on Monday before a potential semifinals match 6 p.m. today.
“I think it was important,” Johnson said of Friday's 10-0 win against the Falcons, citing how it helped keep BHS in sync ahead of even bigger conference matchups.
The mercy-rule victory was a boost to the winning team, Ray added.
“Going into next week, I feel really confident in us,” she said.
