Coach Mandy Taylor's Fort Calhoun track and field team did its record-breaking at home.
The Pioneers snapped four school records Tuesday, winning the boys team title and taking third in the girls' team standings during the FCHS Invite.
Altogether, seven hometown athletes completed history-making efforts in front of their home crowd. Alex Schuler, Clay Bohnenkamp, Kaiden Rodriguez and Michael Maxon won the 400-meter relay in a school-record time of 43.21 seconds, breaking last year's record time with Preston Johnson by 0.21. The mark bested second-place Omaha Roncalli by 0.55 Tuesday, too.
Kaylee Taylor, meanwhile, beat the 30-year-old Calhoun record of Kelly Koziol in the triple jump. The senior cleared 35 feet, 9 inches, winning the event by 2.75 inches.
In the pole vault, Pioneers Afton Byelick and TJ DeMilt both set records, too. Byelick bested her own mark, clearing 10 feet for first in the event.
DeMilt, meanwhile, put his name atop a list once topped by Eugene Tietz's top mark from 1985. The senior Pioneer's best effort Tuesday cleared the bar set at 13-2, securing him a second-place meet finish.
Altogether, though, the FCHS boys scored 139 team points during the home meet. The total bested second-place Yutan by 53.
In addition to the finishes above, Maxon, Seth Waters, Matthew Kelly and Andrew Namuth added first-place individual results to their team's overall finish. Maxon won the 100 dash in 11.04 seconds, while Waters took first in the 800 run with a 1:58.39 run.
Kelly earned first in the 300 hurdles with a 41.64 effort as well and Namuth covered 45-10 with his best shot put attempt.
The Fort Calhoun boys' 3,200-meter relay team crossed the finish line first, too. Waters, Chris Post-Whiteowl, Merritt Olberding and Will Dennis clocked in at 8:23.38.
As noted, Byelick and Taylor won events for the FCHS girls, but so, too, did Emilee Thayer-Mencke and Isabel Wray. Thayer-Mencke cleared 5 feet in the high jump, while Wray won the discus with a 106-11 throw.
Fresh off of their record-breaking performances, the Pioneers next compete 10 a.m. Saturday during the Nebraska Capitol Conference meet at Conestoga.
Unified athletes compete
Tuesday's track and field meet featured Unified competition as well with the host Pioneers, the Blair Bears and the Bennington Badgers all participating.
The athletes and partners ran the 100-meter dash and the 400 relay, while also competing in long jump and shot put. In the 100, the top Washington County athletes were Riley Yanak and Taylor O'Neil of Blair, who finished in 12.85 and 21.38 seconds, respectively. The top partners were Fort Calhoun's Gavin Welchert (11.98) and BHS' Elizabeth Bray (14.29).
The Bears' team of Keenan Wyman, Caden Finken, AJ Damme and Yanak won the 400 relay, too.
